Tunghai University Students Hold Summer Camp To Care For Children In Rural Area

From 2015, under the encouragement and organization of Prof Hwang Chin-yin who is also a member of Tunghai University Christian Church, about 150 students of Department of Industrial Engineering and Enterprise Information(IEEI) of Tunghai University are annually invited to attend a summer camp activities for the children of Er-shui Elementary School at Changhua county. Many children attending the summer camp activity came from the marginalized families of single-parent and new immigrants.
Prof Hwang recalled the very seed of such summer camp was actually planted in his young experience as a student recruited to do social service during his school days. Due to an occasional introduction two years ago by Rev Jaing Ming-en to have an acquaintance of Rev Lee Ing-hsien of Er-shui Presbyterian Church, Prof Hwang was inspired to see that raising a summer camp at Er-shui church would not only benefit for the elementary school children but also would invite more college students at Tunghai campus to learn what the service and love taught by the church would mean.
To mobilize the children to learn more and afresh about the world around, many activities for the school children were held in annual 6 days summer camp, including the entertained English courses, interesting applied arithmetic, introduction of different cultures, outdoor games, table manners and etc. Especially, the children would be arranged to visit university campus, playgrounds, museums, and MacDonald restaurant to cater their needs. For the coming summer camp in 2017, students, faculties and alumni of IEEI of Tunghai University had raised NT$ 250,000 to support this charity event, Prof Hwang said, as this action of love and service had touched the hearts of many people.
Rev Lee Ing-hsien highly affirmed what Prof Hwang and his IEEI students had offered to the children in rural area like Er-shui in the past three years. The church, as a platform to integrate social resources and local demands, would continue to play her critical role to enhance this two-way ministry of service and love, Rev Lee pledged.
