From England To Formosa: A Special Exhibition Of Dr Landsborough III, Dr Landsborough IV And Their Spouses
Reported by Simon Lin
From November 15 to December 3, a special exhibition of the pioneering founders of Changhua Christian Hospital(CCH), Dr Landsborough III, Dr Landsborough IV And Their Spouses, was held at National Changhua Living Art Center to commemorate the 120th anniversary of CCH and the 60th anniversary since Dr Landsborough III passed away. Through seven major threads as beginning, training, believing, working, sacrificing, teaching and blossoming, the amazing lives stories of these respectable medical missionaries are proclaimed to Taiwan society again.
Noteworthy were that, authorized by United Reformed Church in the UK, hundreds of Dr Landborugh’s family photos, missionary documents and maps borrowing from the School of Oriental and African Studies of University of London appeared first time in Taiwan. In addition, the pre-missionary training pictures of Dr Gavin Russel and Rev Campbell Naismith Moody, the first medical missionary and the first pastor sent into central Taiwan respectively by the Presbyterian Church of England, were also exhibited in this special exhibition.
Prof Liu Yau-ren, the organizer of this exhibition, reminded the visiting audience that the income of an ordinary physician in 19th century England was absolutely lucrative to afford a comfortable life, yet serving as a devoted medical missionary at far-eastern Asia in Taiwan, like Dr Landsborough III, could only receive a meager salary from his mission society. In other words, the amazing service offered by Dr Landsborough III, Dr Landsborough IV And Their Spouses to the Taiwanese were accumulated over 120 years, yet they were never paid a penny from Taiwan Society, Prof Liu remarked, adding that should we not pay tribute to their great service and sacrifice and carry on their spirits to pass the good news to the needy around us?
