Former PCC Missionary Elder Welma Welsh Comes Back To See Old Friends In Taiwan

Reported by Lin Yi-yin

The 82-year-old Elder Welma Welsh, former missionary of The Presbyterian Church in Canada(PCC) serving in Taiwan from 1969 to 1975, came back to Taiwan in early June to attend the 40th anniversary of memorial service for the mission in Bunun Presbytery.

Guided by Rev Yeh Jing-an, secretary of PCT Ecumenical Committee, Elder Welsh made a tour to MacKay Memorial Hospital, Tam-kang Senior High School, Aletheia University, The MacKay Hospital and his memorial statue set up alongside Tam-sui river.

Once served as an English secretary of Rev Kao Chun-ming, who was appointed as General Secretary of PCT in 1970s, Elder Welsh then translated and typed the famous Statement on our national fate by PCT (29 December, 1971) from Chinese into English.

To let more countries to learn Taiwan’s urgency then, this statement was also mailed to US embassy in Taiwan and many ecumenical partner churches overseas. Lest this statement be intercepted by KMT government, Elder Welsh even personally brought this statement out of Taiwan to publicize and gave quite a shock to contemporary international society.

In this trip back to Taiwan, Elder Welsh was invited together with Mrs Susan Clarke, Moderator of Wellington-Washington Presbytery, which has a partner relationship with Bunun Presbytery. During her visit, Elder Welsh had also given her warm greetings and best wishes to Rev Kao Chun-ming through a phone call.
