Paying Tribute To A Great Taiwan Historian, The Complete Works of Prof Chang Yen-hsien Is Launched

Reported by Lin Yi-yin

On September 30, a book launch of the complete works of Prof Chang Yen-hsien, former President of Academia Historica and a renown expert in Taiwan history, was held by Wu San-lien Taiwan Center at National 228 Memorial Museum. To remember Prof Chang’s life mission as working out a Taiwanese national identity through in-depth historic studies, the nine volumes complete works on Taiwan history is entitled as “Documenting History to Build Up the Taiwan Nation” by the chief editor Prof Tai Pao-tsun, a historian of National Chengchu University.

The content of this posthumous anthology is divided into five parts: research articles and lecture records; papers on politics, society and history; studies on 228 massacre; pieces as book preface or introduction; stories of people and times. In sum, about 660 pieces of articles and over 2 million words are collected in this anthology to caricature Taiwan history that Prof Chang pursued with his whole life and energy.

In the book launch, Mrs Lin Hsiu-li, widow of Prof Chang, remarked emotionally about Prof Chang’s posthumous publication: “He always said he was busy writing prefaces for other people, but had no time to settle down his own works. Now his wish is finally fulfilled.” Choked several times in speech, Mrs Lin said these 8.5 kilograms’ tomes meant a deep love to her and and gave a great comfort to the families, especially at the eve of the third anniversary of Prof Chang’s pass away due to a heart attack in an academic trip in USA. She also gave her special thanks to Wu San-lien Taiwan Center and all the editorial efforts contributed by Prof Tai and so many respectable and enthusiastic Taiwanese.
