Besides making a splash in sports news recently, Taiwanese youths grabbed headlines in church news as well when Lu Yueh-wen was elected as one of the vice-presidents of the newly formed World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC). WCRC appointed 1 president and 4 vice-presidents at its Uniting General Council held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

PCT General Secretary Andrew Chang used this occasion to encourage PCT youths to become active participants in ecumenical events and put their talents to good use on the international stage.

Chang encouraged Lu, a youth from Seven Stars Presbytery’s EastGate Church, to accept this great and important responsibility. He said he was confident PCT youth possessed many necessary skills needed to excel on the international stage.

Change returned from WCRC on June 29 and reported with excitement on several achievements witnessed during his trip. Not only was a Taiwanese elected to become a vice-president, WCRC also passed a motion to write to the United Nations in support of Taiwan’s participation at international organizations and Taiwan’s existence as an independent country.

Commenting on WCRC passing a motion that’d pave the way for its Executive Committee to write to the UN, Chang said the passing of this motion was nothing short of a “miracle”, because the same motion had failed to pass 7 years ago at WARC’s general assembly, and Taiwan was even cast as a troublemaker then.

However, after Chang became PCT General Secretary in 2005, PCT changed its strategy concerning ecumenical exchanges. In the past few years, it has focused instead on inviting various church leaders toTaiwan and being good hosts during such visits so that those who come to Taiwan may realize how vastly it differs from China and support PCT efforts once they understand Taiwan better.

WCRC’s motion is proof that efforts in the past few years were not only worthwhile, but the change in strategy was also the right decision. Chang also thanked Taiwanese churches abroad for their efforts in making all of these accomplishments possible.
