Newly-elected Greater Tainan Mayor William Lai underscored during his inauguration ceremony and thanksgiving service that he would rely on God in every matter and decision-making during his term in office as major. He hoped Tainan would serve as a model city leading Taiwan in the areas of autonomy, normalcy, and greatness when it comes to governing.
The ceremony held at Tainan East Gate Barclay Memorial Church on December 26, 2010, was also attended by many members of his cabinet, as well as city legislators, some of them also Christians. The major also said he hoped to start a Christian fellowship within Tainan City Hall for all Christian politicians.
During this service, all participants and pastors in attendance prayed to God for the new mayor and for all of Tainan. They prayed for God to give the new mayor and his team wisdom in governing Tainan and promoting Tainan so that it would become a renown, world-class city. They also prayed for the Gospel to spread far and wide across Tainan and bless all of the city’s inhabitants.
The ceremony’s sermon was delivered by Rev. C.M. Kao. He alluded to the spirit of Christmas and pointed to Christ as model to encourage Mayor Lai – and the other 4 new mayors who were supposedly inaugurated on that day in other parts of the country.
Rev. Kao remarked that all mayors ought to remember Jesus as their model and remember that with great powers come greater expectations of humility and willingness to be a servants of the people.
