Taiwan Bible Society Holds Translation Workshop For Hoklo, Hakka and Indigenous Languages

Reported by Lin Yi-yin

From August 13 to 17, many Taiwanese pastors and Bible translators from Hoklo, Hakka and Indigenous peoples are invited to attend a Bible translation workshop at the Bible Society in Taiwan(BST).

Four distinguished Bible scholars, including Rev Dr Paul Mclean, Rev Dr Liang Wang-hui, Prof Simon S. M. Wong and Dr Yu Suee-yan are invited as translation counselors delivering their thoughts on various biblical issues, like translation principles, semantics, biblical nomenclature, parallel texts and etc, for this translation workshop.

From 1957, BST launched the first Bible translation project for aboriginal peoples and focused on Amis language. Finally in 1997, the first Amis Bible including both Old Testament and New Testament was formerly published. In addition, the complete Taroko Bible, though its translation was launched by BST in 1956 yet officially finished in 2005. As to the third aboriginal Bible in Taiwan, Rukai Bible, it was launched in 1958 and put into press in 2017.

Except the above three aboriginal Bibles, completely translated with both OT and NT, many other aboriginal Bibles, including Tao, Paiwan, Bunun, Tsou, Seediq and Tayal, have also been translated with complete NT and the books of Proverbs/Psalms of OT in a steady publication schedule by BST.

Through such Bible translation workshop, BST hopes many more Taiwanese aboriginal peoples, like Puyuma, Siraya and etc, not yet possessing the Bible in their language, can hear and read the Word of God translated into their mother tongues in a not too distant future!
