Rukai Presbytery’s Church Put Environmental Care Into Action After Sunday Service

Reported by Lin Wang-ting

In the morning on September 8, a Sunday service combined with community cleaning event is held at Changzhi Baihe Tribe Park in Pingtung county. All church members, including Sunday school children, juvenile, youth, women and even elders, are mobilized to attend this special service reaching out to the surrounding environment.

Quoting Genesis 1:27-31 at her sermon, Rev Wu Hsu-fang, Moderator of Rukai Presbytery, reminds the audience that our care for God’s creation in the world is a very important duty of a Christian. She emphasizes that PCT’s ministry is not only limited in a fervent engagement in evangelical mission, Christian education or social reform, but also expressed in their enthusiastic concern of God’s creation – the environment around us.

Rev Lin Wei-lien, secretary of PCT’s Church and Society Community, also comes to attend this significant service. Speaking from the very special “Environmental Sunday”, designated as the first Sunday in June from 1997 by PCT, Rev Lin introduces PCT’s ministry for Taiwan environment has progressed and cooperated with the movement clean-up Taiwan coast since 2015.

Regarding the recent concerns about the more and more serious plastic pollution of global oceans, Rev Lin urges Taiwan church to recognize that such marine pollution does not originate from beach or coast but actually start from our everyday habits of dumping our plastic garbage too easily. And it is every Christian responsibility to reduce such plastic pollution and care for our environments from our common daily lives, Rev Lin says.
