Farmer Rights Activist Tai Chen-yao Remembered One Year Later After His Death

Reported by Lin Wan-ting

On December 1, a memorial service was held in the house of former farmer activist Tai Chen-yao at Chiau-Tou district, Kaohsiung to commemorate what he had contributed to Taiwan agriculture and the welfare of farmers.

Citing the scripture verse Micah 6:8, “O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”, Rev Cheng Kuo-chon called the audience to learn from the moving history of the establishment of modern Israel in 1947.

He stressed that the true faith of God is not only confined to personal happiness but also to pursue justice and peace for the public. Retrieving the etymological root of “kindness” back to its Hebrew as “womb”, Rev Cheng reminded an advice of “love kindness” meant an attitude of reverence for life and relentlessness in hope; defining “walk humbly with your God” as seeing oneself humbly like Jesus’ passion journey into Jerusalem, the audience were advised to imitate Jesus and do utmost to care for Taiwan’s land and the people.

Finally, Rev Cheng encouraged the attending crowd to follow the humble model set up by our loyal Tai Chen-yao for Taiwanese people and keep marching forward resolutely in a humble mind with God to pursue justice and peace!
