Remembering Missionary Mrs Lillian Dickson, Members Of Mustard Seed International Hold Thanksgiving Service At Hualien

Reported by Chen Yi-hsuan

In the afternoon on January 6, dozens of pastors, laymen, and nurses graduated from MSI(Mustard Seed International)-sponsored kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools assembled at the learning school of MSI-Hualien to discuss how to help more people with love and fulfill Jesus’ order of “Love your neighbor”. Next day, January 7, a thanksgiving service was also held to commemorate the marvelous contribution of the independent missionary Mrs Lillian Dickson to Taiwan society.

As a missionary, author, and public speaker, Mrs Lillian Dickson’s legacy in Taiwan society is extraordinarily amazing: except setting up orphanages, children’s homes for the leper patients, nursery school, kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school, “Furthermore her work has led to Bible college and seminary training for pastors, lay leaders and church planting teams, and medical care in clinics and hospitals” according to a 2010 report from Horizons: The Magazine For Presbyterian Women.

Noteworthy is that she also often returned to the U.S. for speaking tours until 1978 and “consistently recruited support by discussing the tremendous needs of Taiwan through interviews on television and through other media”, according to an academic article by Dr Lee Jender in 2014.

Rev Lin Mao-der, pastor of Fong-bin Presbyterian Church at Amis Presbytery, encouraged the audience at his sermon during the thanksgiving service to follow the spirit of Mrs Lillian Dickson to be the loyal companions of the suffered people. Because “their pains are our pains and their problems are our problems”, we should not just walk away at ease after we had lived through their pains, advised Rev Lin.
