Satisfaction Of President Tsai’s Performance One Year Later Plunged To 18%

Reported by Lin Yi-yin

Instead of convening a press conference to report her policy achievements on the first anniversary of the Presidential inauguration, President Tsai spent the whole morning with some marginalized children and ate lunch with them in the Presidential Office on May 20.

“I am not working for opinion polls”, Tsai defiantly said, “I work for Taiwan!” But, many opinion polls on Tsai’s performance in her first year at Presidential Office showed that the peoples’ satisfaction on Tsai’s overall rating is quite low.

On May 18, Taiwan Democracy Watch unveiled an internet opinion poll, which was rigorous done from May 15 to 17 by the Election Study Center of National Chengchi University. The poll results showed that the satisfaction of Tsai’s performance plunged to 18.4% only.

The respondents of this opinion poll, surveyed through an internet e-mail, were all above 20-year-old and chosen in a random method. In sum, 833 copies of valid inquiry sheets were mailed back to Election Study Center. Respondents aged between 40 to 49 was the top population group(31.9%). Over 72.2% of the inquired were college graduated or above. Respondents’ preference on specific political party: KMT(29.5%), DPP(23.3%), Neutral(25.1%), and NPP(12.1%).

In this opinion poll, about 10 critical issues of Taiwan society were raised to the respondents, including constitutional reform(67.4% yes vs. 23.6% nay), 1992 consensus(35.5% pro vs. 56.6% con), monitoring law of treaties between Taiwan and China(78% agreed to speed up).

In the meantime, 95% of the respondents thought the reviewing process of the government’s forward-looking infrastructure program was absolutely unprepared and a cost-effect analysis should be done first ; 84% people agreed Tsai as the highest commander of political decision should deliver a union address in the congress.
