Taitung MMH Pays Tribute To Catholic Holy Cross Hospice Through A Charity Bazaar

To honor the amazing yet anonymous 63 years’ service in Taiwan by the Catholic Holy Cross Hospice, supported by a global Catholic order known as Sister of Mercy of the Holy Cross – Sororum Caritatis Sanctae Crucis(SCSC), a special charity bazaar selling Rev Pan Hu-chie’s watercolor paintings and picture albums was launched from mid-July at Taitung MacKay Memorial Hospital(MMH).
Patients in Catholic Holy Cross Hospice for Chronically Ill are mostly the homeless aborigines without families from Amis and Bunun at Kwan-san area of Taitung County. At the early days of the hospice ministry, the sisters were in their 20s or 30s, so they could drove cars or even motorbikes to carry patients to the hospice; but now, these sisters are mostly over 80 years old and deserve our care and respect in return.
To pay tribute to these elder sisters and what they had served for Taiwan society, Rev Pan wished to raise NT$ 500,000 for the hospice through selling his paintings and album in the charity bazaar at Taitung MMH.
Rev Pan also recalled how he became more and more interested and appreciated to learn the ministries of those Catholic orders, especially Bethlehem Mission Society (having served in Taiwan for over 64 years) and Sister of Mercy of the Holy Cross, during the past five years of leading the public to trace the missionary sites at eastern Taiwan by Rev Hugh Richie(1840-1879), a pioneering missionary sent by the Presbyterian Church in England.
These brave yet humble guardian angels had served and protected the people in Taitung for decades yet quite unknown to Taiwan society, Superintendent Dr Wang Kong-lian of Taitung MMH expressed, adding that their wonderful and amazing services deserve a special salute by all Taiwanese.
