Pastors praise, comment on historicity of “Formosa Betrayed”

A Hollywood movie depicting Taiwanese society under KMT rule during martial law era was released inTaiwan on August 6, 2010, and garnered much acclaim from viewers. The movie had been released in some theatres and film festivals in North America in February and will soon be available on DVD.
Pastors who viewed “Formosa Betrayed” praised the movie’s director, Will Tiao, a second-generation Taiwanese American, for intricately weaving the murders of Professor Chen Wen-chen and journalist Henry Liu and the Kaohsiung Incident into a great movie. They were impressed by Tiao’s accurate yet suspenseful portrayal of Taiwanese society during martial law.
“Formosa Betrayed” is based on the true story and murder of Chen Wen-chen, a Taiwanese professor who taught at a university in Kansas. In the movie, a FBI agent sent to investigate the murder finds himself unwittingly thrown into the tangled web of US-China-Taiwan relations often steeped in conspiracy and becomes an unlikely target of assassination by all three governments.
PCT General Secretary Andrew Chang remarked that “Formosa Betrayed” unmasked the KMT’s reign of terror in Taiwan since the February 28 Massacre in 1947 and brought to mind childhood memories of his parents admonishing him that children must be seen and not heard.
Chang underscored that history must not be forgotten. Though KMT’s crimes and brutality can be forgiven, the truth must be revealed and the record set straight.
For Joyce Shih, secretary to former PCT General Secretary C.M. Kao, the film brought back memories of the Lin Family Massacre that took place around the time of the Kaohsiung Incident in February 1980.
Former PCT General Assembly Moderator Rev. Chen Yu-chuan said that he was extremely grateful for God’s protection during those harrowing days. He had helped many survivors and their families grieve and recover following the Kaohsiung Incident.
Chen added that survivors of the Kaohsiung Incident should come forward and tell their story while they are still living so that this part of Taiwanese history is not forgotten by future generations.
